Language: Going Bananas Over Bananas

Who doesn't know that a banana is a long thick curved tropical fruit, having a yellow skin and a soft sweet inside when ripe?
However, that is not the only meaning of the word banana. There are other expressions containing the name of this fruit. let's take a look:

top banana: in informal American English, it refers to the most important person in an organization, the boss:
He's the top banana at a recording company.

banana republic: a derogatory term to refer to a small country, especially in Central or South America, that is industrially underdeveloped. politically unsteady and often dependent on financial support from abroad.

bananas is an American slang term which means mad, crazy
Everybody on the block thinks Mr. Allan is bananas because he walks his dog at midnight.

go bananas means to become wild or angry:
Dad will go bananas when he sees the mess you've made with his tools.

banana skin is a British informal term which refers to an event or situation likely to cause difficulty or make one foolish (from a typical humorous situation in British comedy, in which a person slips on a banana skin and falls over):
This incident could turn into another banana skin for the government.

banana split: a sweet dish made of banana spilt in two with ice cream, chocolate liquid (sauce), whipped cream and nuts.
